Lindquist Highlights Busy Weekend With First ITU World Cup Victory
by B.J. Hoeptner - USA Triathlon

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 31, 2000) - U.S. triathlete Barb Lindquist (Jackson Hole, Wyo.) continued to amaze the triathlon world Sunday by winning her first ITU World Cup in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada.

Lindquist, who took the lead in the swim and never gave it up, finished the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run in two hours, 10 minutes and 55.7 seconds. She defeated second-place Joanna Zeiger (Baltimore, Md.), a member of the U.S. Olympic team, by 1:35.8. Laura Reback (North Palm Beach, Fla.) was fourth and Sarah Baker of the United States finished 15th.

Lindquist, who can be seen in magazine ads and is featured in an infomercial, is the top-ranked triathlete in the United States (No. 5 in the world), but struggled with the heat and had to drop out of the USA Triathlon Olympic Team Trials in May in Texas.

The U.S. men struggled in Corner Brook. Doug Friman (Tucson, Ariz.) led the way with a ninth-place finish in 1:57:34. U.S. Olympic team member Ryan Bolton (Gillette, Wyo.) was 11th (1:59:45). Other U.S. finishers included Eric Burgan (14th) and Andy Kelsey (16th). Australian Olympic team member Craig Walton won the race in 1:55:53.6. He was followed by Simon Whitfield (Canada) and Gilberto Gonzalez (Venezuela).

Closer to home, U.S. Olympic team member Jennifer Gutierrez (San Antonio, Texas) was third at the Boulder Peak Triathlon on Sunday in Boulder, Colo. Gutierrez finished the course in 2:14:32. Japanese Olympic team member Haruna Hosoya won the race in 2:11:00. Kerstin Welle was second.

On the men's side Conrad Stoltz of the South African Olympic team, who is living and training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, won in 1:56:58. Marc Lees of Australia was second and Wes Hobson (Boulder) was third. Kevin Carter, who trains at the Olympic Training Center, was fifth.

In the Boulder Peak Duathlon, Eric Schwartz finished first in the men's event in 1:39:42.

Finally, at the Ironman USA race in Lake Placid, N.Y., Cameron Widoff (Boulder, Colo.) won the men's race in 8:46:05. Jamey Yon of the United States was second. Other U.S. finishers in the top 10 were Eric Bean (fifth) and Peter Kotland (ninth).

Julian Nievergelt (Medfield, Mass.) was the first U.S. woman across the line, finishing second overall behind Melissa Spooner of Canada (9:45:57). Other U.S. women in the top 10 were Donna Smyers (fourth), Mary Uhl (fifth), Christine Heilmann (sixth), Michelle Deasy (seventh), Maryellen Powers (eighth), Kirsten Johnston (ninth) and Kirsten Black (10th).
