Alison Dunlap Ranked Number 1 in the World
MAY 1, 2000 -- For the first time since she began mountain biking full time in 1997, Team GT rider Alison Dunlap (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is ranked number one in the world as of May 1, 2000. The rankings are calculated by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the sport's international governing body.
Dunlap took over the top spot from Canadian Alison Sydor after placing fourth at the third round of the World Cup Series, April 30 in Houffalize, Belgium. Dunlap, the '99 national cross-country champion and Pan American Games gold medalist, is also tied with Australian Mary Grigson for first place overall in the World Cup Series.
Durango, Colo., resident and three-time consecutive national champion (1996-98) Ruthie Matthes (Trek-Volkswagen) holds strong at sixth. Team Koulius Zaard rider Ann Trombley (Golden, Colo.) moves from 23rd overall to 21st. Shari Kain (Cupertino, Calif. -- RLX Polo Sport) also rose in the rankings from 36th to 33rd. Dunlap, Matthes, Trombley and Kain have all qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Long Team.

In the men's rankings, Volvo-Cannondale rider and '96 mountain bike Olympian Tinker Juarez (Downey, Calif.) jumps five places to 37th. Juarez was the top American male at the first three rounds of the World Cup Series. He placed 10th at the race in Mazatlan, Mexico. Steve Larsen (Jacksonville, Ore. -- LL Bean/Mongoose) holds at 45th.
